Susan spent years being someone who was “going to write something”, before discovering that something was children’s fiction. Before that she worked in a number of fields, including a spell as an Editorial Assistant for a small publisher, several years as a full-time farmer’s wife and mother, and most recently as a teacher of Drama and English. For most of her life she’s been torn between her passions for theatre and for literature, but now she’s settled for writing she’s delighted to find that storytelling brings together skills of characterisation, timing and audience awareness from both – and at last she can admit to enjoying comic science fiction as much as she enjoys Shakespeare.
Peregrin Zefyr and the Alloid Threat is the story of Benny’s adventure with Zeff, a teenager who travels in time and space in his camper van the Windbird. Zeff is a trickster figure, driven by curiosity, thirst for adventure and a streak of mischief. He’s on the side of right, but sometimes has to be reminded which that is.
One of the things Susan appreciated most about the MA course was the opportunity to experiment with different voices and genres. She’s looking forward to writing Benny and Zeff’s next adventure, but she’s taken a break from light-hearted science fiction for the time being to write a romantic mystery for teen readers.
